a talk with Nana.

this is a blog for no one but myself. something to look at later in life. feel read to read, though.

Me: Man Nana, just imagine if you were ever to move. it would be so much stuff to move out cuz you've been here over 20 years. Nana, why do you have to go move out there with D.J. ? i know it's just for 3 weeks but sheeesh ! we need and want you here !
Nana: Well D.J. needs me out there too, Iman. I needa go and get him settled in and then i'll be back . This is something that i want to do . I've been living here forever.. i wanna go do new things. And its only 3 weeks. the thing yu guys don't understand is that i won't be here forever. you should know this by experience from your Grandma Gladys.
Me: i felt myself getting teary eyed right then.] I know, Nana.
[
Nana: Right. you guys tend to forget how old i am since my hair doesn't grey. I'll be 70 next year. I'm getting up there. so you guys have to realize that my presence wont be around forever. yea, i'm leaving for 3 weeks, but at some point it'll be longer than that. [i felt myself growing uncomfortable. i never wanted to have this conversation. i didn't wanna imagine what she was talking about. So you guys have to learn from me while Im here .. learn how to cook and stuff.] dee called me today talkin about 'what u gon cook for the 4th? '. im like.. what YALL gon cook ? haha. yall better learn how to cook now. and remember the things i taught you. like, never let people be able to read what you're thinking in your face expressions. in corporate america, the only way you will survive is by hiding your true feelings. I want you to remember that now. and remember to read that book [The Spook Who Sat by the Door] !

after the talk, i wanted Nana to go visit wherever she wanted to. i realized i was selfish and let her know she should visit everywhere she wanted while she was still here. it was sooo rough trying to digest the fact that Nana won't always be around. cuz she is what keeps the order in this family. although sometimes strict, she is sooo very loving. and soo funny. and its not that the family doesnt realize that one day she'll be gone, its the fact that we don't want to. we aren't ready for it.
God, please watch over my Nana. although healthy, she is aging. I just ask that you watch after her and keep her with us as long as possible. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
